Owner & Publisher – Flying Models Plans Service

Our migration to a new commerce platform has broken links between some of our products. While we are working diligently to find them all, please use the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page to let us know if you find one before us.

Thanks!

Our primary product is paper plans for building model airplanes and boats.

We also have back issues, books and some modeling tools and supplies within our “Additional Items” menu. And yes, we do sell a few selected “Short Kits”, as detailed below.

We typically ship plans within a day or two of being ordered, and forward tracking information as soon as we have it.

Most domestic orders will arrive within 7-10 days, while international orders or typically 3-4 weeks in transit.

Once picked up, delivery of your order is literally out of our hands. That said, if your order is lost in transit and does not arrive within a reasonable waiting period after the original estimated delivery date, we are happy to ship another set of prints for you.

Due to skyrocketing postal charges, we are now folding most plan orders to reduce your costs as much as possible. While our store postage calculators get us close, it is not uncommon to find a lower rate. When we are able to do so, we will refund the difference to you.

We do still ship plans rolled from time to time at a customer’s request. When doing so we will again search for the most affordable rate we can find. Please reach out via our Contact Us link below to discuss.

We typically ship folded plans via USPS Ground Advantage to provide tracking, while UPS usually offers the most economical option for rolled orders.

International orders are shipped via USPS at the most economical rate offered for your order. As with domestic orders, excess postage funds will be refunded once your order is in transit.

Absolutely! We offer a second copy of any plan for half price when purchased at the same time as the original. Just place the plan in your shopping cart, and adjust the quantity there.

Experienced builders often buy a second plan copy to cut up for templates. Others want to gift a plan to a friend to make their build more social. Still others hang up a copy near the workbench for clutter free reference as they build.

You can indeed, and we regularly ship plans printed in reverse. For those scratching your heads, some plans were drawn with only one wing panel shown, and the traditional solution is to flip the plan over and either wax or oil it to build the opposite panel. While this does work, it is messy both while building, and when storing the plan after your build is completed.

A second copy of the plan printed in reverse provides an easy way to build two identical wing panels, and can also be cut up for part templates.

The short answer is yes, and often times it does not cost anything extra. We may decide to adjust the pricing if there is a significant increase in paper used. Rest assured that we will thoroughly discuss pricing before either of us commits to a custom print size.

We have reduced plans to half the original size and enlarged plans up to nearly 7x. We also use a few tricks developed in-house to avoid excessively fat lines when enlarging at extreme ratios.

Unfortunately we are not offering plans electronically at this time.

A short kit typically includes the full size plan, along with the more challenging or repetitive parts of an airframe such as ribs, formers, and other oddly shaped parts like wing joiners.

Our parts are usually cut using laser and CNC milling technology. Some parts are also cut using precision jigs and fixtures in concert with table saws, band saws and power sanders.

Short kits do not include readily available sheet and stick stock, to allow builders to choose their own stock and avoid unnecessary material markups.  Builders should also expect to supply their own hardware, such as wheels, landing gear wire, pushrods, control horns, engine/motor mounts, etc.

Feel free to contact us with any questions, or to discuss a short kit you don’t see currently offered.

While most of the plans in our catalog were published in Flying Models over the years, there are some exceptions, such as the Flyline Models plan collection. The Flyline designs are well loved by many modelers and our intent is to honor the great work of Hurst Bowers, Herb Cluckey, Don Srull, and Earl Stahl, without infringing upon their intellectual property.

Over several conversations before his passing, Don Srull encouraged us to offer prints from the Flyline Models collection through our plan service. It is our intent to provide prints for modelers who still appreciate and wish to build these classic designs, as was Don Srull’s desire.

In addition to the original sizes described, we are happy to increase or reduce your prints to suit. Please use the “Contact Us” link below to discuss your project, or any other questions you might have.

Unfortunately Flying Models magazine has ceased publication.

We do have approximately 300 back issues still available, though in limited numbers.

Our primary purpose at this time is to maintain the Flying Models legacy by keeping the plans available.

Perhaps, and we do take pride in helping out our customers whenever were can. Please use the “Contact Us” link below to let us try. We don’t proclaim to be experts, but we have been around the block a few times, and have met a few along the way.
