Irene is a semi-scale portrayal of a typical small trading schooner from the early 20th century. Gary Webb, noted builder of several full scale sailboats, offers Irene as an easy-building, fantasy-scale sailing vessel for radio control, ideal for first time builders.
Plywood over bulkhead construction requires no special building jigs or forms. Plans include 7 sheets, with drawings, full size templates, and instructions detailing hull assembly, radio control system, spars & rigging, keel bulb casting, and more. Also included are drawings for both a rowing dory and skiff for use as optional tenders or deck ornamentation.
Irene's sail plan features her original Marconi-rigged mainsail. A secondary sheet details an optional gaff-rigged mainsail, offering more sail area, with a slightly lower main mast. Irene's optional Gaff rig is shown on the Bearospace Combo Package
pages. Both rigs are easily installed and readily removed, for quick setup and convenient storage. Finally, Irene's removable keel lets her stand tall and proud in a breeze.
Building Irene exercises a variety of skills, making this a satisfying project for the experienced builder, or a great learning project for the novice modeler. The finished model is attractive and robust, a real boat in every way. And as builder and captain, it is your responsibility to paint her the colors of your choice and give her a proper name.
With her classic appeal and great manners while under way, Irene promises to put a smile on your face, and turn heads whenever she sails.
