"Emma" is a semi-scale portrayal of a sprit-rigged cruising sloop from the mid 20th century, designed for RC sailing. Emma is the second model boat plan offering from Gary Webb, noted builder of several full scale sailboats. She shares the classic "big boat" appeal and great manners under way of her sister, the schooner Irene
, while her smaller size and simpler details allow faster building, and make her more portable once completed. She's ideal for first time builders.
Emma's plan set for do-it-yourself scratchbuilding include 5 large sheets. Full-size patterns assure easy, accurate, creation of this model. Plywood over bulkhead construction requires no special building jigs or forms. Drawings and instructions detail hull assembly, radio control system, spars & rigging, keel bulb casting, and more. Mast, rudder and fin keel are readily removable for easy storage and transport. Emma's moderate sized rig provides realistic sailing performance in breezes up to about 15 knots.
Building Emma exercises a variety of skills, making this a satisfying project for the experienced builder, or a great learning project for the novice modeler. The finished model is attractive and robust, a real boat in every way. And as builder and captain, it is your responsibility to paint her the colors of your choice and give her a proper name.
